And it should have been postponed before we left the Pearl of the Valleys. The rain falling on an already saturated surface made it unplayable and the person inspecting the pitch earlier today, if he/she had an ounce of common sense, should have seen that. It cost a lot of people a lot of money to travel today and it could have been easily avoided had someone with a brain made a decisive decision. When we arrived the dressing rooms weren't even unlocked which gave us a clue as to how things were panning out and even the groundsman admitted there was no chance despite his efforts with the squeegee roller. The ref had a look once and gave it another 15 minutes to see if things improved but as the rain fell it was hopeless and at just before 2pm the decision was made to postpone the game, which quite frankly, could have been made a lot earlier today. Whether or not it was the lure of a bit of away support and the resulting bar takings had any influence on the decision not to call the game off earlier is open to conjecture but it certainly felt that way to me and it does not seem a very professional way to run a club or to treat its visitors. As it turned out it will probably cost you as our people only had a pint or two preferring to spend their hard earned cash in our till as opposed to yours and you'll have to pay for our return visit. Over the last few seasons we have made the decision to call off games early to prevent inconvenience and expense to supporters and it does leave a nasty taste in the mouth to be treated in such a cavalier fashion by your club and it would be a great gesture to pay for the supporters coach fares to this aborted game. I won't hold my breath!

The pitch at 10.30 was fine, not a cloud in the sky, to be fair if it was a 1pm kick off it would have gone ahead. Why would we want you to travel all the way up and then cancel? Its cost the club loads to cancel after you arrived as we have to pay your travel costs plus refs fees, if your thinkibg all we wanted was beer money from 20 people then you must be mad,if you were a big club bringing hundreds then yeh i could see your point.

Yes, but you knew it was a 3pm kick off and the forecast for our area was not good. We travelled to Wimborne the other week, more in hope than expectation but the referee who passed the pitch fit for play in the morning took into account the weather forecast for that area the rest of the day and the game safely went ahead. I assume that the official who passed the pitch fit for play today did not do so and therefore lacked sound common sense in his decision which would have prevented the farce that happened today. I am aware of the costs involved of postponing fixtures and had this one been postponed earlier it would have mitigated some of the costs that you'll incur as well as those of the travelling support. Had the game gone ahead there would have been in excess of a hundred travelling supporters as luckily many of our fans were warned on route of the postponement so they were able to turn back before reaching the ground.

The problem with calling off the game early is that it may... have been possible to play it as in many cases in the past. You arrive at the ground, look at the pitch, an it's in perfect playing condition.
I attended two games today - FGR v Newport County, then Shortwood v Cirencester. The weather conditions in both were terrible but both went ahead. At Utd of Manchester the game made 11mins, and somewhere else in non-league abandoned before the half time whistle.
Merthyr to Cinderford is not too far - not exactly Blyth to Gloucester or Worcester. Annoyingly far enough if the game is called off but not the End of the World, that should have been before Xmas according to the Mayans.
To the Merthyr Fan - people worked hard on the pitch this morning trying to get it ready in the hope of a great game. They have a sponge machine that works but even that didn't help in the end. These guys almost certainly put far more effort into the game taking place than the players who might have played, and the fans making their way in nicely heated motors.
Clubs at this level rely heavily on gate money and have to risk everything possible to get the game on or chance going under...
As always, Cinderford Town tried their hardest play the GAME and that's good enough regardless of it being either against Merthyr or Manchester Utd

Don't blame the Ref so Childish, You say we are not a good non league team, when your fans came in the FA Cup they ripped or flags down and also when your fans came yesterday, they was trying to get in and sneak in without paying THATS WHAT I CALL A DISGRACE.
So don't blame our club for the game being off, BLAME THE REF.

I'm not for one minute decrying the efforts of the volunteers to make the pitch playable, just the futility of doing so. The guy with the squeegee did his best but it was like watching Canute trying to turn back the waves - it was never going to happen. With the water table so high the pitch just couldn't take anymore and not even an army of forkers would have made a difference as there was nowhere for the excess water to drain. Had it not been raining - like today - there may have been a chance but with the forecast for yesterday rightly predicting heavy rain all I'm saying is that it would have been more sensible to take the pragmatic approach at the 10am inspection and postpone the game then and save everyone a lot of grief as it was very annoying and frustrating to arrive and see the puddles on the pitch. The referee would have been open to advice, I'm sure.
As far as the previous poster is concerned I'd like him to tell me where I've said that Cinderford are "not a good non league team" as I cannot find any reference to that comment anywhere. Like my team, your club is run by volunteers who do as much as they can to make things work and do it well and without the likes of them clubs would fold. Similarly I fail to see the point of his last sentence as everyone is proud of their nationality. As for his comment regarding some of our fans trying to get in without paying, a few idiots did so in the FA Cup game and were rightly condemned for doing so by other right thinking fans, so again, I fail to see the point of raising that again.

Problem with weather is its unpredictable,if you cancel early ,the sun will come out-- your damned if you do and your damned if you don't.I live in South Wales and obviously rang before traveling. The latish cancellation was obviously unfortunate for all concerned, but the weather in the last few weeks has been horrendous . I look forward to the game when it is rearranged, between two clubs at the extreme boundaries of our league and good old adversaries. The Causeway pitch is greatly improved over the last 5 years. It drains well and the surface is excellent. But it can only take so much rain.
