Interesting looking at the FA rules and regs concerning playing surfaces - don't understand recommending gradients to avoid undue player fatigue - see also a brief from the Non League Newspaper Fans Forum regarding Southern League Regional - I'm wondering if he knows where Bideford is...
Topography
Consideration regarding the ‘lie of the land’ is most important when siting football pitches. The land should under no circumstances be severely undulating or have a steep slope across or along the line of play.
Gradients
Gradients are recommended to avoid undue fatigue to players, to assist in surface water ‘run off‘ or to compliment ‘falls’ for drainage systems, where necessary.
Recommended gradients for football pitches are 1:80 (min) down the length and 1:40 (min) across the width of the pitch, or as level as possible if circumstances dictate.
Orientation
Orientation refers to the alignment of the pitch in relation to the position of the sun. The purpose is to prevent sun glare into the eyes of key players such as goal keepers.
The ideal pitch orientation is between 285o NW to 20o NE in a north/south direction. The most common orientation is on a bearing of 345o

Mr Alan Thomas thinks that Southern League Premier will be looking at next season’s fixture list with trepidation, meaning that teams such as Truro, Poole, Tiverton, and Merthyr could be in the mix. He goes on to say that the FA should recognise that the Southern League should be more regionalised.
Mr Thomas who goes on to say that as far as he is aware, Merthyr is still in Wales and so would be better off playing in the Welsh League. Mr Thomas, who is almost certainly not Welsh although it sounds it, probably does not know that there are now two Severn crossings, and would almost certainly prefer all teams to be promoted from the Southern Central.
Mr Thomas hasn't of course, looked upwards to see that if his home Town team Bedford Utd sitting only 6points off play-off position were promoted, he’d have the likes of Blyth Spartans, Barrow, and Workington to visit because they would almost certainly go into the Conference Northern
