Great result for Town today
Sadly - I went to Merthyr v Poole today only because I had to go there.
Wow - what a game, not because it was a good game because it wasn't - but there was a lot of action...
Poole started the better looking the much fitter and agile team - must say that some of the Merthyr defenders and goalie look a bit beer laden. The Martyrs scored against the run of play with their first serious attack, Poole having dominated the first 20mins keeping the home team well penned in.
Merthyr pressed for a second and had several chances gaining the upper hand without success. As the first 45 drew to the end Poole pressed for an equalizer, and got it via sustained corners and penalty. A deliberate on the line hand ball and Red Card saw Merthyr a player short for the second half.
The second half started with both team cancelling each other, reducing chances to a minimum and then all hell let loose... The Ref who was playing a delayed advantage game, which helped the flow of the game in my eyes, allowed a series of niggling tackles to run on and around the halfway - the result being a violent challenge on a Poole player resulting in a very serious injury and 12min stoppage, and a straight red card to a Merthyr midfielder(no name because no match program left). The Martyrs now down to 9 men.
You would have then expected the powerful Poole team to take control, which the did and got a second goal within 10mins of the injury restart, but they didn't look confident. Two very good subs by the Martyrs manager inspired a Merthyr revival and without surprise, equalized with 15mins still on the clock.
The last 15 was tense... The Poole fans were nervous like their team - Merthyr could score again and it did look possible, and they did have the chances. As the game nearer the end, Poole had an abundance of chances and should have wrapped it up with a beautiful overhead kick, and several open goals almost on the whistle - but it wasn't to be.
Great second half performance by Merthyr, and until the second sending off, a very quiet home crowd. Most of the noise came from the away fans until then. As the game goes it was pretty average and typical top of the table tussle.
Having spoke to both sets of fans, Yate seem to be the feared team in our division, and none fancy a play-off. Neither seem to rate Hungerford or their chances of winning the title. I've invited Poole Supporters to bring as many as possible to the Causeway and to stop at Littledean Beer Festival on the way. They seem very interested and hope to fill the players coach and another minibus when they come.
Hopefully their players might like to sample some real ale befor the match and we win 2-0...
