Dear readers, I'm looking for a large slice of luck and good fortune in trying to track down a match day programme from this friendly game played on Tuesday the 17th September 1963. I have it on good authority that this match was arranged after the transfer of Mike Kear from Cinderford to Newport County. Its an 8 page programme. Will pay a decent price for one in good condition.
If you can help or know of someone that may. I would be obliged if you would email me on s.james538@btinternet.com
Kind regards and good luck - Scott James

I can remember the game plainly. It was a real thrill at the time to have a football league side on the Causeway.I think Weare was in goal and they had a striker called Sheffield. I seem to recall a tricky winger called Pugh but I might be wrong.I recently gave most of my complete collection, of Town league progs away but I kept special ones egFA Cup ,Trophy, Glos County matches and the like ,so I`ll have a look.By the way I live in Caerleon ,so I`ll see what I can do to help you. Yes, the game was arranged as a thank you for letting you have Mike Kear, who you then sold a few weeks later to Middlesborough for £14500. Its about time County gave us another friendly to make up for it-even tho it was 50 years ago.BOXXON THE TOWN

Dear Boxxon, that would be fantastic. I live in Croesyceiliog and regularly walk into Caerleon and back for my excercise fix. I think that Len Hill also played in this match, which I believe was relevant as he later went onto become a player/coach at Cinderford. Ronnie Radford of Hereford fame also played. If you do happen to come across a copy of this programme or happen to know of anyone else that maybe able to assist I would be over the moon. Fingers crossed - Scott

Regarding Newport County - just by accident, bumped into some interesting stats... sadly nothing to do with Town
Newport played Swansea Town(now City) back in the 20's/30's In one game at Somerton Park, Port beat Town 5-2 with get this... 21,167 watching. And in 1922 Newport's average gate in Div3 South was 8,000.
Just as anther matter of interest, I'm sure one of the games in Bev's Town DVD may have been managed by Len Hill. And by coincidence, I was talking to an ex-town captain in Len's era only this morning over a coffee - he had the highest regard for Len as a manager, and mentioned that he had sadly passed on.

Newport County share this centenary season with the Swans ( sadly these days that's where the similarities end, for the time being!!) Len Hill was a local painter and decorator who I believe died a few years ago. I seem to recall George Beattie ( ex player also sadly passed away) reminiscing about how good a chap Len was.

Yes Len Hill was a Caerleon lad and his family still live there. He also played cricket for Glamorgan, for many years. From a soccer point of view he told me he believed that the fullbacks were the most important and influential players in the team!!!!! Real gent, genuine bloke. George Beattie was one of my hero`s as a lad .Hard as nails, inside forward/midfielder.Memories of him covered in mud. Went to his funeral at St Woolos cathedral.Newport last year.

Its a small old world, I work with George Beattie' s son Andy ( who as you know had a decent non league careeer himself) Andy brought George's memorabilia into work whilst George was still alive. Great to see that he still had copies of his old playing contracts that included Gloucester City as well. Andy tells me that he was never that found of the County, but they both attended a home game just before his passing. If you do happen to dig the Cinderford programme out of the closet I'd be over the moon. Kind regards Scott
